Vietnam's Tradition of Beautiful Bonsai Tree ArtPlaces series of videos our COVID ULTIMATE reserve guide. Find out moreThe Vietnam tradition of Bonsai Tree ArtBonsai trees have been carefully cultivated around the world for decades, but this ancient art form originated in Japan over a thousand years ago. This beautiful tradition has made its way to Vietnam, where talented artists meticulously sow to become a miniature version of their counterparts of great growth. Look at the Vietnamese tradition of Bonsai tree art. The Origins of the Botanical ArtThis millennial tradition involves the use of several cultivation techniques to cultivate a seed that eventually imitates the form and scale of trees of full size. Artists use methods such as blade trimming, pruning, defoliation and wiring (creating the overall shape of the tree) to achieve their miniature resemblance. Bonsai trees also require dedicated caregivers. The massive size difference between regular trees and bonsai trees affects every aspect of tree biology. Full-sized trees have roots that reach several meters on the ground, while a bonsai tree stays in a small pot so that the roots are cut regularly. The trees normally grow up to five meters and the Bonsai trees are obviously much smaller (at least one metre tall) and therefore require regular care. Irrigation, location, soil and especially the type of seedlings play a role in dictating how a bonsai tree will develop. Not all trees are specimens suitable for the development of bonsai trees. Some species of trees are more popular to have features that facilitate the cultivation of a mini-version of it, such as small leaves or needles. Specimens of origin for bonsai treesThe Bensai artists can use seedlings, cuts or a small tree of a species to create a bonsai. In Vietnam, some trees are more desirable than others and can get high prices on the market. For this reason, some trees have been the target of their ability to be successfully cultivated as bonsai trees. This has led to a decrease in the habitat for the Cat Ba langur, a rare species of monkey in Vietnam. The popular tree in question for the Vietnamese bonsai producers is the Ficus benjamica, found on Cat Ba Island and other parts of the country. Young trees or their stems can sell for $1,000 in bonsai nurseries and, as a result, the locals have been traveling the island of Cat Ba for bonsai source material, to the detriment of langur in danger, which has driven local conservation efforts and education to prevent massive deforestation. Bonsai Festivals This art form is popular in Vietnam and there are two great festivals in one of the oldest cities in Vietnam to show the work of artists. Hue hosts a large-scale exhibition for local artists during the holidays of Tet and another during the annual Hue Festival. Vietnamese artists from all over Vietnam come to show the results of their fine cultivation techniques. Artists also make miniature living landscapes called Hòn Nam B in Vietnamese nap. This tradition encompasses similar bonsai traditions but allows more creativity when commingling landscapes. Hòn Nam The crown B emphasizes the natural landscape. The trees of Bonsai are formed by the hand of their cultivator, but in the scenes of landscape the trees are most affected by the natural environment rather than a careful cultivation by the artist. Green Hue Bonsai ClubCulture Trip met with Mr. Nguy/25070/n Công Cδ, a 72-year-old bonsai enthusiast and member of the Green Hue Bonsai Club. Mr. Cordow began planting bonsai trees in 1981 and told Culture Trip that his inspiration came from his visits to the nearby real and pagodas in Hue, where there were many decorative bonsai trees and landscapes. Mr. Cordoga began his bonsai creations using different specimens of source material such as a cut, a seed or a small tree of a species suitable for the development of bonsai. His son is also a bonsai artist and both have a large area in their home dedicated to the bonsai art. Each bonsai tree can take two or three years of cultivation before it is mature and can be valued between 20-40 million VND ($2,000-4,000 USD)! The bonsai tradition continues to attract new artists and enthusiasts in Vietnam. If you are in the city to take a look at these fascinating creations, take a look at one of the two festivals held every year in Hue or head to one of the many in Saigon.
