Related Articles The avocado (American Persea) is a tree that grows up to heights of 40 feet or more in the plant resistance zones of the U.S. Department of Agriculture 9 to 11. A warm tissue plant that produces small yellow flowers, avocado trees are usually grafted for commercial fruit production. The gardener can cultivate a pit tree found in the avocado fruit. You can keep the small plant with the gardening practice known as bonsai. This is the process of growing and pruning a small shrub or tree to look like ancient trees that grow in nature. The bonsai plant is often the size of an average housing plant. You can start with an avocado pit or rooted cut for bonsai avocado plant. Bonsai Tree Requirements For a plant to make a good specimen for bonsai gardening, it must be flexible, have an attractive bark, and the foliage and flowers should be balanced in size to the plant. The avocado tree has large leaves that do not make it a good specimen for the bonsai garden. However, pruned branches and cut leaves can be maintained while the tree is still young. Avocado trees grow up to 2 feet each year, and eventually they will overcome the bonsai container. Pit SprayThe avocado pit has been used for years in school projects. You need three sticks, a small mouth jar full of water, and a bright window. Push the sticks around the circumference of the pit about 2/3 of the rounded bottom so you can rest the sticks on the edge of the jar, and suspend the well in the water. The water level should be kept high enough that the bottom 1/2 inch of the seed is submerged. The avocado pit will spring in about 6 weeks. Allow the plant to grow at a height of approximately 6 inches. Lift the plant back to a height of 3 inches to promote root development. Once the stem produces leaves, plant the avocado in a rich soil so that the upper half of the pit is exposed. Pruning Avocado Bonsais An avocado should be pruned as it grows to promote ramification. The pinching process keeps the plant shorter than normal, while strengthening the trunk. The leaves will grow quite large, some up to 10 inches, unless the cuts are developed. Dip a pair of pruning scissors in a 1-part solution of bleach to 9 parts of water for about 5 minutes to sterilize them. Use sterile scissors to cut the leaves and pruning the branches. As the avocado plant grows, you should choose a bonsai style so that your pruning cuts create an attractive bonsai specimen. There are about 10 basic styles, from the formal style with a central leader and uniform side branches or an informal style that has two or more leaders and a unique lateral growth of branches. Forming the avocado plant To start the training of bonsai, you should choose which side of the avocado plant is the front view. You should use flexible copper wire or aluminum made for bonsai gardening to train horizontal growth of the branches. The wire is wrapped considerably around the branch but not tightly so the plant is not restricted. The wire allows you to bend the branch to the desired growth direction. If you feel uncomfortable using wire, you can train the branches with fishing line used as guide wires. Grab the fishing line around the branch, pull gently to position, and anchor the line to the pot. Test and train avocado once or twice a year when new growth appears. Replace the training wire every year to avoid lace in the tree branch. ReferencesWriter BioJulie Richards is a freelance writer from Ohio.
